Domestic Electrical Installer Schemes

06 January 2017

What is Part-P?

Part-P refers to a section in the building regulations which ensures that “Reasonable provision shall be made in the design and installation of electrical installations in order to protect persons operating, maintaining or altering the installations from fire or injury.”

It is the regulation concerning the safety of fixed electrical installations in and around dwellings, and therefore affects domestic electrical installers and contractors. The legal requirement is for all work to comply with the relevant standards in the UK, which is the BS 7671 (2008:2015) and for all notifiable work to be inspected by building control.

Only an installer registered on a Competent Persons Scheme can self-certify their work. Competent Persons Schemes were set up with support from the government to standardise the assessment of competency.

To become a domestic electrical installer you will need to understand and be able to work safely to the relevant regulations and standards and perform the proper inspections and tests. As a minimum, the following qualifications (plus experience) are required to join a scheme:

=    Domestic Electrical Installer incorporating Building Regs (Part-P)

   =    Understanding BS7671(2008:2015) 17th Edition 3rd Amendment Level 3 Award

=    Initial Verification & Periodic Condition Reporting Level 3 Awards
